Weightloss medications - one patient's personal story- Week 0

Winchester GP were truly humbled when one of our patients, unprompted, started sending in their weekly experiences of starting the weightloss medication Mounjaro. We think it’s an incredibly brave and generous thing to do, and so are delighted to share their updates verbatim here, starting with how they came to our consultation room in the first place.

Week 0: weight 103.3kg, size 18/20 (depending on brand)

I started my weight loss journey at 10 years old when I started going to Weight Watchers meetings. I can't even begin to imagine my child going to a WW meetings at that age, it makes me feel sick to be honest with you. I'm glad to see these days you need to be 18 or over to attend. Back then, while not the norm it certainly happened and it set me down a long long road of a terrible relationship with food and my body.

Many years later, let’s say about 5 years ago at it’s peak - my relationship with my body, food and exercise was at an all time low. I was probably a similar size as I am now but a new Mum on top of that so trying to lose the weight that comes with having a baby and trying to come to terms with how a baby is permanently attached to you, plus all the other changes - both internal and external that comes as well.

So a few years ago, after many yoyo dieting since that first WW meeting, I decided to take a new approach. I met with a Personal Trainer and started to address my issues around my hatred of exercise. It worked and I started feeling healthier - but my body didn’t seem to change. So I saw a nutritionist - again, amazing results and feeling so much better about myself but not a huge change on the scales. I also saw a hypnotist who did fantastic things for my self esteem and my relationship with food.

So all in all, the last two years have put me in a fantastic position for eating better, moving better and simply feeling better about myself. Yet the weight is still there. As much as my brief to my PT and nutritionist two years ago was to be healthier and not about losing weight - you’d hope you’d start seeing a difference.

So that’s led me to Mounjaro.

I did a lot of research and I actually ended up emailing a well known agony aunt asking their opinion on sharing my thoughts to my family. Her response - “Don’t feel guilty, you’re not cheating, ignore everyone else’s views and get on it - I am!”.

I spoke to a Dr who I was seeing for gastro reasons (nothing to do with weight loss and not set to make money out of me so non-biased) - his reaction “I think we’re on the brink of a revolution, do it!”.

So I made an appointment with Winchester GP, had a really good chat about everything and asked for a prescription there and then…

…and so we begin
